heart

You asked me what my heart was made of

glass, I said
brittle and diaphanously shrouded
with stubborn cobwebs and dust;
cavernous and insipid despite
brimming with the essence of life;
solitarily ensnared in comfort
never seeing the daylight
even when breath becomes air,
just waiting to be putrefied in the dying earth.
